Valentines Day

Looking for a little treat to give your special someone?

I always think a special dinner out somewhere nice and a hand made dessert at home is the best way to spend Valentine Day with your special someone.

Strawberry Chiffon Tarts

1/3 cup of cream, whip after measuring.

1 tbs of unflavoured Gelatin= 3 sheets

1/4 cup of cold water

1/2 cup of boring water

1 cup of sugar

1 1/2 cups of strawberries, pureed, leave a few whole for decoration

1/4 tsp salt

2 egg whites, stiffly beaten ( with 1/4 cup of sugar thats included above)

10 small tart cases, I brought already made ones form the supermarket.

Whip the cream and leave to the side.

Soak the gelatine in the cold water, once soft add the bowling water until dissolved. You need to give it a stir to help it along.

Add to the gelatin, the strawberry puree, 3/4 cup of the sugar and the salt. Stir until it thickens. Fold in the whip cream.

In a metal bowl whip the eggs white with rest of the sugar, and fold into the mix. Careful not to take all the air out.

Pour into your tart cases and decorate with extra strawberry. You can also just put into ramekins with out the tart cases if you're gluten or dairy free. Place in the fridge to set.

Enjoy!

Australia Day Dessert

Well you've got your lamb for the day, but whats for dessert?

Mango&Passionfruit Mini Pavs.

I bough the nest form the supermarket.

Buy as many nests as you like.

I used mango for 3 nests, and 1 passionfruit per 2 nests.

Whip some cream. Layer your nest with cream, then finely diced mango. Finish off with passionfruit on the top. Too easy.

Have a great Australia Day!

Australia Day!

Hope you're set for Australia Day!

If not here's a quick and easy recipe for the day

Mint Lamb cultlets

Serves 2

6 lamb cutlets

2 limes- juice

1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar

1/3 cup mint- finely chopped

1 garlic clove- crushed

1/3 cup of honey.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Place lamb cutlets in the bowl and let sit in the fridge for at least 1/2 hr to marinade.

On a high heat cook each side of the cutlet for 2 min. Let the cutlets rest for 5 mins before serving with a fresh and healthy salad.

Enjoy!

Fruit&Veg Co-op publicity

For those who missed it, our little co-op was mentioned in The Sunday Telegraph. After imported produce were found to be contaminated, it was a nice plug for local growers but also a timely reminder to buy local and seasonal.

F&V jar swap

Yesterday our Fruit&Veg co-op had a jar swap as part of our pre- Christmas celebrations.
A great variety including the good old favourites of chilli jam, lemon butter. But an interesting mix of curry paste, Sourdough mother, Baileys Irish cream and cookies.
I'll show you each of their uses as I get through them.

More dishes

Buckwheat pancakes with fresh strawberries and blueberries to start your day. A fresh salad of goats feta, roasted pumpkin, and beetroot( left over from the last Fruit&Veg shop). Lovely lettuce and rocket to tie them all together. Also try strawberries muffins for brekkie or a snack!

Roast

Monday lamb roast, and enough for lunch too!
Using left over potatoes, new beans and small lamb roast. All for a household of two.
I find a roast during the week the easiest dinner to cook. You only need to peel and cut some veggies, then everything is in the oven. Just carve and wash up!

Fruit&Veg Co-Op

Yesterday was my turn to go and shop for our group of 10. I'm hoping to post all the meals I've cooked in the next fortnight. Gets what we got for our $40 each
1 pt strawberries
1pt blueberries
Bunch of kale
Bag of rocket
Head of lettuce
Bunch of rhubarb
Bag of beans
Whole pumpkin
4 avocados
Bunch of bananas
5 green apples
12 Roma tomatoes
6 eggs
Whole garlic head

I'm hoping to make rhubarb muffins, BBQ chook salad, avocado/tomatoes and feta brushetta, marinated steak in garlic with salad or steamed beans, kale pesto in scrambled eggs and also pasta, roasted pumpkin risotto and also in salad, hamburgers with kale pesto, sausages and salad, the extra ingredients have cost approx $75 for woolworths.

Already I've made rhubarb muffins and kale pesto. Roasted the pumpkin ready for quick meals during the week.
Stayed tuned.

Winter garden

Although it's still cold the days have been so lovely here in Sydney.
At the moment throw a little fertiliser on your lemon and lime trees ready for the spring time growth.
My lime tree is coming along nicely hoping for a good 1st harvest this season.
Keep using your Rosemary, parsley,
mint and chives.
If you're wanting to plant in spring get some fertiliser into the ground and turn- getting ready.

Traditional gyradiko

Looking for authentic Greek gyros in Sydney? There's a new place in Bexley on forest rd. Be prepared line up, there's always a queue but moves fairly quickly and worth the wait.
It won't break the bank-pork gyros 7.80, with a can of soft drink $10.30 and a chip combo $13.00.

Lazybones lounge marrickville

A live music venue in the heart of Marrickville. Open 8 months now, the barman tells me that he gets run off his feet, and has done from day 1.
I've come on a Sunday at 5pm just as the crowd starts to build.
The interior is as the website describes- eclectic! Chandeliers and leather lounges fill the room, almost too many. But I get the impression this isn't a place the crowd gets up and dances but rather sits and enjoys the atmosphere, which it certainly is full of, even without a crowd.
The menu boast nachos and stone cooked pizzas at around $16 each. My advice eat great food outside on the many wonderful places that surround Lazybones and come here for a drink after.

Return to Namache

Long day again 8 hours to Namache. Its helps when most is down hill, though we had a few steep ups and the guides helped carry my bag again. Not a lot of energy left at the stage of the trip. But also I'm taking it slow and enjoying the scenery, taking lots of photos. Have seen a number of the national bird pheasant. The boys are a bright blue and the girls are brown and blend with the low shrubs. Funny enough their the ones I see the first. Have seen 4
vultures flying in the sky, they huge. All of which the group seem to have missed. Two more days. I'm looking forward to not walking so much anymore but will be sad to not be here in the mountains.

Return of my group from EBC

Was great to see everyone heading down the hill. They looked exhausted!
It took them longer as Terry stopped at the medical outpost on the way down. He has a chest infection, and is more sunburnt than me. He looks terrible. I heard he needed help getting down from base camp, the altitude had started to affect him. He also has a bruise that is the while side of his thigh. The walk into EBC had only Ben cleared that morning, it's wasn't the right track and was extremely diifucult. The guys feet kept going through the snow under their feet.Kimberly had some nasty scratches up her shins from the rocks under the snow. She also said they walked up a valley and heard avalanches the whole time either of them. There was only about 10 people already at base camp when they got there. I'm so glad they made it but am happy with my decision not to go on.
